We reported on Rose Plaza in South Williamsburg last week, but here are the details of what is being planned: “A three-building, 801-unit (20% affordable) project with 29,000-square-feet of commercial space fronting Kent and Division avenues, rounded out by a waterfront esplanade. Rose Plaza on the River’s buildings would all have six-story bases and reach heights of 18, 24, and 28 stories. In other words, we’re talking massive! By comparison, next door neighbor Schaefer Landing has 350 units.”–Brownstoner

Meet the Leaning Towers of Greenpoint
May 19th, 2008 · Comments Off on Meet the Leaning Towers of Greenpoint
The two buildings on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint in the photo above do not appear to be leaning because of barreling or other lens distortion. They are actually leaning somewhat and would appear to have been in such condition for some time. The lot with the pretty purple fence in between is 602 Manhattan Avenue, which is destined to be the site of a four-story building with seven apartments. In the case, if the neighboring buildings survive the construction of the new building, they might actually be propped up by it. In any case, there’s a Stop Work Order on the new project because DOB says there were no plans on the site for the shoring work, which is clearly quite intricate, if not artistic.

Fun with Non-Hazardous Waste Barrels: N. 5 Street Edition
May 19th, 2008 · Comments Off on Fun with Non-Hazardous Waste Barrels: N. 5 Street Edition

Yes, this barrel, which we found sitting on the corner of N. 4 Street and Driggs Avenue this weekend says that it’s “non-hazardous” and has a sticker saying it’s empty, but it originated with DEC Spill 0800695 and reminds us of barrels that once graced the sidewalk in front of the Roebling Oil Building, aka Warehouse 11.

Disconnected in Brooklyn: “Subway Sasquatch”
May 19th, 2008 · Comments Off on Disconnected in Brooklyn: “Subway Sasquatch”
Yesterday’s Sunday Brooklyn Missed Connection about the sex addict in Park Slope was such an obvious choice to feature that we had to leave an excellent candidate behind at the station. It’s about a somewhat hirsute Missed Connection:
Subway Sasquatch, where are you? – w4m – 22 (L train 8AM)
YOU: Head of a hipster, body of Chewbacca, taking one too many pictures of yourself on the L this morning…ME: Blond hair messily tucked into ski-hat and green Welli boots. Amused by your antics and always one for an intergalactic manly-manly, but too involved with my ipod to take a risk…I noticed you offered your seat to a woman with baby carriage. You saw me smiling. Then it was First Avenue – my stop – and all was lost. If you’re looking from a princess to rescue from a bla-Friday, even better, a date for a late showing of Iron Man, I’m the one. Hoping to hear from you soon. Lula
UPDATE: Lula, we think your fur ball has been found. We gathered this post over the weekend and, then, wrote it last night. Jen Carlson answered this mystery a while ago on Gothamist. So, as it turns out, there was a Missed Connection response, after all, only it refers to Sasquatch and Chewbacca rather than a Wookie.

Meet “The Collection at Court Street” AKA 340 Court
May 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments
The development on the site of the now-demolished International Longshoreman’s Association Building at 340 Court Street has gotten a name: It will be “The Collection at Court Street“and a placeholder website is up. Our Carroll Gardens Correspondent sent news of the naming, which has been revealed via a sign on the construction fence. Those that have followed the saga might recall the design was not well received by all in the community. Our correspondent writes: “Clarett’s logo is a red sealing wax seal with a ‘c’ and The COLLECTION is a bunker with wacky windows…hmmm.”

Roebling Oil Field East Building Coming Down
May 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments
The definitive expansion of the Roebling Oil Building to the west (aka the Roebling Oil Building West), with another big Karl Fischer building, is about to get underway with the demolition of buildings on Driggs Avenue between N. 9 and N. 10 Street. Plans have already been approved for the new Roebling Oil extension, which will clock in at 70 feet tall with 54 units. One assumes the Roebling Oil Empire will cover the full block if all the properties can be purchased. If you are new to the Roebling Oil issue and don’t understand the name, click here, and it will be clear.

Brooklyn Nibbles: Penny Licks Has Vegan Treats on Bedford
May 19th, 2008 · 11 Comments

Penny Licks on Bedford Avenue has opened in Williamsburg and the little shop, which aims to recreate an old-time ice cream and candy store, is loaded with vegan and organic treats. Actually, organic and vegan is the theme of the place. Among the features are the cakes (Peanut Butter Mousse Bombs, Death by Chocolate, etc.) of Vegan Treats, which is a major supplier to the NYC vegan cake and cookie market based in Bethlehem, Pa. The ice cream, on the other hand, is from Adirondack Creamery, and there are some vegan selections from another producer. Our only question is whether a Bedford Avenue Vegan Snack War is about to erupt with Vinnie’s Pizza down the block, which also stocks Vegan Moon Pies, cookies and brownies. Advantage for snack selection goes to Penny Licks whereas the Vegan Pizza edge goes to Vinnie’s.

Upcoming Reminder: New 110 Amity Plans Coming Tonight
May 19th, 2008 · Comments Off on Upcoming Reminder: New 110 Amity Plans Coming Tonight
New plans for 110 Amity Street in Cobble Hill, also known as the former Lamm Institute Building, are supposed to be show tonight. The original idea for the building was panned by the community and by the Landmarks Preservation Commission before being withdrawn by the developer so that suggestions from the community could be incorporated. At the time, an executive from the developer, Time Equities wrote: “We will re-conceive the project in a traditional street wall approach and try to present a plan that is responsive to the input received at the most recent Landmark hearing. As we did last time, we will reach out to the community and Landmark staff prior to presenting the final concept to the commission.” The meeting will take place tonight from 7PM-9PM in Conference Room B at Long Island College Hospital.

Mystery Movie Shooting on Slope’s Seventh Avenue
May 19th, 2008 · 5 Comments
There’s a mystery film shooting on Seventh Avenue in Park Slope between Third and Fourth Streets this week. We say “mystery” because the sign for the shoot on the 21st says “untitled” production. We can say that a rumor that the film is about a Park Slope-based incident that is set off when a child throws pasta on nearby diners and a stroller mows down several people waiting for a table at Sotto Voce is completely unfounded.

Windsor Terrace Mourns Kyung-Sook Woo
May 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Windsor Terrace is mourning Kyung-Sook Woo, the beloved owner of the dry cleaning store who was murdered in a robbery on Friday. (A suspect was arrested yesterday.) Lauren Collins of the Windsor Terrace Alliance sent of photos of the very sad and moving memorial that has grown outside the store. She writes:
The death has really rocked the community…The woman in blue is attaching a momento to the gate; on the left of the gate, someone has taped the police sketch of the suspect. Windsor Terrace is in some ways a small town and people really look out for each other but in this case, that wasn’t possible.
It’s safe to say that the brutal act has shaken people throughout South Brooklyn.

Slope’s Fifth Avenue Fair Dampened by Rain
May 19th, 2008 · 3 Comments
The annual Fifth Avenue Fair in Park Slope took place yesterday and was dampened by rain for the second time in the last three years. The rain started coming down around 1:30 and by the time it let up around 4:30 a lot of the vendors had already packed up. The street was filled before the rain started, but the crowd did thin significantly once it started coming down hard enough to get people, food and merchandise significantly wet.

Temporary Indy 500 Roller Coaster Rising in Coney Island

[Photo courtesy of Screwtape/Coney Island Message Board]
This is a roller coast called the Indy 500, which is one of the temporary Reithoffer Shows rides rising on property in Coney Island owned by developer Joe Sitt that will open on May 2 and run through early June. It’s a small, portable coaster that is also known as a Schwarzkopf Flitzer (try saying that 10 times very fast), designed by Anton Schwartzkopf. A version of the coaster exists in Wildwood, NJ. One of Mr. Flitzer’s bigger coasters, the Jumbo Jet, was in Coney Island through the early 2000s (on the same property where the carnival rides are going), but was sold and dismantled.

Black and Jewish community leaders in Crown Heights called Sunday for calm – and more help from police and City Hall – in the wake of racially charged violence in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Geoffrey Davis, brother of slain City Councilman James Davis, organized the gathering at Albany Ave. and Empire Blvd., where black attackers pummeled and robbed Jewish youth Alon Sherman, 16, as he rode his bike on Friday. “We need more foot patrol. We want solutions and answers,” Davis said.–NYDN

The Selling of Williamsburg: Party Time at NV

The latest Karl Fischer development to come on the market in Williamsburg, NV at N. 5 Street and Berry, had its opening party last week. A GL North Brooklyn Correspondent sends along a photo of the festivities, which took place in what looks like it will be the courtyard/garden behind the building. The party had a Brazilian theme and that would be a samba band performing and sand that was placed on the ground.
