Fascinating Vid: Brooklyn Bridge Waterfall from Above

July 21st, 2008 · Comments Off on Fascinating Vid: Brooklyn Bridge Waterfall from Above

Even if you’re done with visuals and vids of Olafur Eliasson’s waterfalls, we highly recommend this one put into our GL Flickr Pool by Josh Derr. It’s a unique view of the top of the Brooklyn Bridge falls that he somehow shot from the bridge. Mr. Derr writes:

Personally, I find the view from above the waterfalls much more interesting than the normal views from down below. You can see the pooling area at the top of the frame, and the diffusers in the middle. The sound of the cascading water is actually quite nice, and helps dampen the din of bridge traffic.

It definitely provides a different look at Mr. Eliasson’s creation

Progress at the Long Island College Hospital Playground?

July 21st, 2008 · Comments Off on Progress at the Long Island College Hospital Playground?

Broken3There is some positive motion to report in the saga of the Long Island College Hospital playground in Cobble Hill, which has been the source of much neighborhood discontent both in terms of the park’s dirty condition and broken playground equipment. This is an email from “Staff at Long Island College Hospital” with some updates about promised improvements:

1) We have started the power washing of the main park.
2) The problem with the drain has been resolved.
3) The repair parts will be delivered in the middle of August. These items are shipped from Finland.
4) We have established an e-mail address LICHPARks@….We will be posting signs in the parks announcing the e-mail address. This will be monitored daily (Monday through Friday)

Unfortunately, the full email wasn’t posted. It functions as a link through the BoCoCa Parents Group on Yahoo. If anyone knows the actual email so that people don’t have to go to the park, feel free to email us or post it in comments.

Tales from the Park Slope Pavilion: Dark Night Goes Well with Heat Stroke

July 21st, 2008 · 11 Comments

It’s been all of about two weeks since we came across a bitter rant about how badly the Pavilion Theater on Prospect Park West sucks. Well, with the opening weekend of Dark Knight more people than usual went to sample the theater’s charms and came away with love for the place. Here’s a charming tale from livetotravel on Brooklynian:

Went to see The Dark Knight at the 3:00 PM show in the big room all the way upstairs – it must have need 90 degrees in that hot box for the entire length of the movie. Everyone was sweating profusely and downing tons of water. Afterward a mob scene ensued with people loudly complaining – all to no avail. The best excuses from the “management” – “I just work here” and “there were too many people.” Jesus – the biggest movie of the summer and they don’t adjust for it! I loved the movie (Ledger is amazing) but I fucking hate the Pavilion!!! Go see it in Manhattan. Boycott that dump!

Holy bat crap, it was actually 96 degrees in the hell hole.

Red Hook Vendors Are Back & Different

July 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Speeches by Sen. Charles Schumer and Borough President Marty Markowitz among others preceded the official return of the Red Hook vendors to the ball fields on Saturday. The homespun affair has had an extreme makeover, with the vendors now dishing out their food from trucks and food carts instead of makeshift stands under tarps. They are also now more on the sidewalk than in the park itself. Our friends at Eater had a full report on and photo gallery of the return.

Giglio Dance #1: The Unique Beauty of the Lift

July 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Here’s our first photo gallery from the Giglio Festival on Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg. The lift took place under a blazing sun at 2PM with a crowd that seemed smaller than usual, possibly because of the blistering heat. We decided to make the “faces” of the Giglio lift a separate photo gallery.

Park Slope Angst Turns to New Alternate Side Regs

July 21st, 2008 · 17 Comments

It didn’t take long for Park Slopers to focus on the clusterf new alternate side parking regulations that went into effect this week. They are not going over well with some people. Someone over at Brooklynian event created a full color coded Google Map to show the new regime. The creator, who posts as 8thandPrez, writes:

Did anyone notice that the new parking regs in Park Slope are really much worse than before? It used to be that half the blocks (from 4th ave to 7th ave) were Mon-Tues street cleaning and the other half were Thurs-Fri. That made for a nice logical sequence where you would park on one set of blocks and then move to the other set of blocks. Now, however, the 4th ave to 7th ave blocks are Mon-Thurs and the other half are Mon-Tues. So, for some strange reason we’ve got Monday street cleaning along the entire length of the streets. Sunday car moving is going to be a real nightmare now.

The full map, which is actually a handy guide to how the neighborhood is now split up is after the jump.

See the full work of art, ahead.

Brooklyn Power Outages Mostly Cleared Up

July 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

The power outages that affected parts of Park Slope, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge and Borough Park on Sunday have been mostly cleared up, at least, according to Con Ed’s outage map. (Each green triangle is 1-50 people without power). The trouble was caused by malfunctions with 4 of the 12 big feeder cables. About 2,000 homes and businesses were without power. Con Ed also reduced voltage to effected areas by 8 percent. Tens of thousands of customers were asked to cut back power use.

Williamsburg Walks & Bedford Ave. Loses the Cars for a Day

July 20th, 2008 · Comments Off on Williamsburg Walks & Bedford Ave. Loses the Cars for a Day

The first Williamsburg Walks event took place yesterday under blazing sun and opposite the Siren Festival in Coney Island. It looks like it was more lively than the efforts on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights, but almost anything on Bedford is going to have an edge in that sense. We’ll be curious to see how it goes on upcoming Saturdays, particularly the ones where the heat index is under 100.

“Third World Dump” Conditions on Burg Street Cleaned Up a Bit

July 19th, 2008 · 1 Comment

There is progress to report about the “Third World Dump” created by a development mess on long-suffering N. 11 Street and Roebling in Williamsburg. (In fact, there are so many construction sites in the area that some days several pile drivers are going at once at sites a few blocks apart creating a most interesting sonic effect. The overall mess and appearance of this part of neighborhood will be fairly awful for at least the next two years.) In any case, the same person that emailed us and sent photos of the mess on N. 11 Street followed up with an email late yesterday saying that it was being cleaned up a little. Our correspondent writes: “The buildings dept must have come down today after a response to some complaints. Some progress has been made. The only issue is the clogged drain at the corner that has formed the new ’11th & Roebling Pool’, from the water that is being sprayed at the site from the opposite corner.” That is a very large dumpster that’s been set up outside the Warehouse 11 building, which is on the site of the cleaned-up Roebling Oil Field.
