Park Slope Angst Turns to New Alternate Side Regs

July 21st, 2008 · 17 Comments

It didn’t take long for Park Slopers to focus on the clusterf new alternate side parking regulations that went into effect this week. They are not going over well with some people. Someone over at Brooklynian event created a full color coded Google Map to show the new regime. The creator, who posts as 8thandPrez, writes:

Did anyone notice that the new parking regs in Park Slope are really much worse than before? It used to be that half the blocks (from 4th ave to 7th ave) were Mon-Tues street cleaning and the other half were Thurs-Fri. That made for a nice logical sequence where you would park on one set of blocks and then move to the other set of blocks. Now, however, the 4th ave to 7th ave blocks are Mon-Thurs and the other half are Mon-Tues. So, for some strange reason we’ve got Monday street cleaning along the entire length of the streets. Sunday car moving is going to be a real nightmare now.

The full map, which is actually a handy guide to how the neighborhood is now split up is after the jump.

getting free street parking to begin with so quit kvetching.
Frankly, I wish there was more street cleaning and had twice a week on each side.

ASP regs are designed to facilitate street cleaning, not the convenience of those who use park.

To somehow argue that this is worse, when total time for asp regs has been reduced by half, and in some locations will be reduced by 3/4, is nuts.

Wow. More stuff for those in Park Slope to whine about.

In parts of the south Slope, the alternate side used to Thurs. and Fri. Now it is Tues and Fri. Our street was NOT cleaned last Tues.

I am the OP and creator of the map. After putting the map together, I realized that the parking situation that seemed dire before is actually not as bad as I had thought.

It is inconvenient, I think, to not have the streets split Mon-Tue / Thur-Fri as they were before. The new regs just mean more driving to look for a space.

I just don’t like the fact that bike lanes were slipped in on us during the alt. side hiatus so we can’t double park on one of our days & an adjacent street that might’ve helped w/ overflow also got a bike lane.

    Aw. That’s a shame . . .

I think it is time to put pressure on the Community Board (or the City Council) to do in Park Solpe, what it is done in many other cities in the world. I am talking of a system of permits for parking that effectively increases space for residents and decreases it for commuters. It will have the advantage to enhance public transportation, reduce polution and gasoline consumption.

Here in Crown Heights, most blocks have ASP rules in effect 4 days a week…

So a grand total of ten subway lines service various areas of Park Slope at various times and these people are complaining about what to do with their cars? Here’s a hint: Get rid of ’em if you don’t want efforts to keep the city somewhat clean from interfering with your precious parking spots.

The lack of perspective is saddening.

But here’s something I don’t get: Park Place btwn 5th & 6th – no parking Tues & Wed 11:30 -1:00. Prospect Place btwn 5th & 6th(one block over)- no parking Tues & Wed 11:00-12:30. Why make things so confusing, are other streets like this?

I agree with Anonymous // Jul 21, 2008 at 9:49 am that we should have more street cleaning. In my section of Park Slope the filthy streets and sidewalks are terrible. It always amazes me how we can have homes selling for $2 – $3M and have filthy streets.

We sweep and keep our sidewalk clean almost daily. The rest of the block is a mess. More street sweeping would help. And little elbow grease from the neighbors would help too.

I don’t have a car but move one for someone who needs it to run errands. Fatuous, smarmy remarks about public transportation don’t contribute anything to the dialogue.

Not only has the city reduced most of the cleaning times from three hours to one and a half hours, but several residential side streets have only *thirty* minutes of cleaning. Hooray for the city.

can we please stop pretending that the “street cleaning” is anything but a way to generate income for the city from tickets? those unnecessarily loud trucks don’t do anything but stir up the grit – if they come by. and i think that the arcane parking times are like that on purpose so they get even more ticket income. i live in bed-stuy where there is no workable public transit over to the slope, and no good groceries. so i come for the co-op and it’s always a total nightmare to park. thanks [sort of] to the one person who was annoyed about not being able to park in the bike lanes. everyone else does. the bike trip over there is a treacherous joke as well.

I am a new comer to the Slope area and relocated from Boston where we had street permit parking and street cleaning that was reduced to once a month from April 1 – Dec 1. The schedule and the parking were never an issue there and the streets managed to stay clean! In the two weeks I have been here I have spent hours and had to arrive at work late in order to move my car for street cleaning. I even wonder how everyone manages to move there car and think doormen and other services must aid in the process. I am considering selling or relocating my car! Any suggestions?

i’m about to move back to nyc to go to school. I do not want to sell my car (i don’t think i’ll be able to). I am horrified at the thought of having to deal with 4 days of alternate side parking.

Streets do not need to be cleaned this often. It is obvious that this is a tax on drivers.

Maybe i’ll be able to find a decent monthly rate at a local parking garage…
