Brooklyn Nibbles: The Return of Park Slope’s Red Hot, Saturday

Red Hot III

There was a steady stream of people wandering past Park Slope’s soon-to-be Red Hot II on Seventh Avenue yesterday evening looking into the windows and taking new carry out and delivery menus. There is a new sign outside and a slightly new look inside as well. The restaurant is reopening on Saturday with a menu almost identical to that of the defunct Red Hot I.

I have to be honest, my husband and I were heartbroken when Red Hot closed their doors. Unsuccessfully, we tried to heal our wounds with some of the other Chinese delivery spots in Windsor Terrace, but nothing came quite close to the yumminess to even the simplest of dishes at our beloved Red Hot.

We went last Sunday night. On the way, we spoke about the amazing Cold Noodles we were in store for, or should I say, we skipped with joy about the peanut butter and hot sauce goodness that awaited for us.

Sadly, we were very disappointed when Thai style noodles arrived with a clump of peanut butter. Missing was the sesame oil, the fire, the garlic…the taste.

We decided to split an order of Shrimp and Asparagus (after all, it was listed as a “special) and since a Red Hot fan going back some time, I knew to trust the specials as well….something special.

Yick! The asparagus was impossible to chew – they didn’t bother trimming the ends and it was like trying to chew on sugarcane but without the sweetness. I’m not even commenting on the shrimp – it was pretty bland.

If they have the same chef, he must have been out that night because our meal was upsetting and totally off par.

Still debating on whether to return…
