“Looks like the neighborhood dog population is increasing – so much so that the dogs are turning on each other during off-leash hours. One resident reports that her dog was left with serious wounds after a pit bull attack this morning. The President of the park’s pets society sent an email to members saying that this kind of attack is on the increase on account of overcrowding.”–General Greene

The Gala
Hypocrisy is lovely when surrounded by dollars
And other accouterments
Salmon pate on dry white toast points
Lightly buttered, the real thing pleased
Weathered wine in sexy glasses
Slipping down the throat so mellow
A wonderful conversation piece
Spruces it up doesn’t it
Turns a bare Charlie Brown Christmas tree
Into a Park Avenue Douglas fir
Dripping with tinsel and lace
Hypocrisy can then ooze its ugly grace…

“While a Tom Otterness sculpture can really brighten up the dark underground of New York, for his latest installation he’s shedding some sunlight on his work. The above was just installed in DUMBO near the pedestrian exit to the Brooklyn Bridge.”–Gothamist

The sun is shining brightly early this morning at the Brooklyn Weather Observatory, but there’s a chill in the air left over from last night and the temperature today will only reach 55. (Later in the week, we’re up into the high 60s and 70s.) The forecast calls for partly sunny skies today and mainly clear tonight with a low of 39.–Accuweather

The Department of Buildings has found major problems with scaffolds at many Brooklyn construction sites. This morning’s Daily News sums it up as “Scaffolds improperly attached to buildings. Sidewalk sheds missing braces. Untrained workers installing crucial safety equipment.” DOB shut down 43 sites (most temporarily) last month during a citywide safety crackdown. Per the News: “The citywide sweep – 305 Brooklyn sites were inspected, and violations were found at 87 – came after a series of high-profile scaffold accidents this winter, including a scaffold collapse in heavy winds in Clinton Hill that killed a construction worker.”

The sunset in Gowanus was spectacular last night, and we happened to be on the Third Street Bridge, just as the clouds turned a variety of shades of fiery yellows and oranges. Enjoy.

Here’s an interesting question from one of our readers about some interesting activity on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope:
Hello- 5th Ave has been completely lined with dumptrucks for the last few days…there must be 15-20 of them at least from maybe sackett to 2nd. I see that they’re doing work on 5th Ave itself near Union, but there’s way more dumptrucks than they could ever possibly fill in a reasonable timeframe. Is this a preview of the Atlantic Yards? Maybe some of your readers know what’s going on?
We presume it’s construction site excavation, but nyone who knows anything, please leave a comment or email us at thegowanuslounge (at) gmail (dot) com.

When it rains it pours and, this week, it’s a Craigslist Sunday Brooklyn Missed Connections monsoon. There is so much weird and juicy goodness that we simply couldn’t decide, so we’re presenting all our top choices:
1)To the gentleman with the small penis that I brought home – w4m – 21 (Williamsburg)
Let me begin by saying I couldn’t even cup it in my hand. It was so small that I confused it with my pinky finger. We met on the dance floor and you had a high pitched voice. I was really drunk, you were looking to get laid. I told myself I wouldn’t do this anymore, but I brought you home. I was just curious as to when you left? You said you were going to the bathroom and then you never came back. It really doesn’t matter, because I passed out and forgot it all ever happened until this morning when I awoke to find something of yours on the floor. If you see this you left your boxers.
2) To all the hipsters who read Camus – w4m
Get over it. It’s so cliche. And you’re not even reading the book because you’re too busy looking around at other people to see if they’re looking at you. And get rid of those big glasses. Duh.
3) wednesday night – we scraped the drunk girl off the sidewalk – m4w – 34 (greenpoint)
it was me and my friend and you were with a guy and we all were trying to wake the girl sleeping on the sidewalk and once we did she flew into a rage and started howling like a banshee and pinching everyone’s cheeks. did she make it home okay?
4) your silver streak made me very pepé le pew… – m4w (L train)
standing next to you on the L train this morning, i was amused by, and very attracted to, your skunk-like silver streak of hair. you had me feeling very pepé le pew… alas, i read my newspaper and said nothing. i need a chance to be your skunk.

Here’s a special Sunday adoptable pet of the week from the Brooklyn Animal Rescource Coalition (BARC) shelter in Williamsburg.

This beautiful creature is named Delbert. He lives at the BARC Shelter in Williamsburg and needs a home. Here is some info about him:
He was found wandering the streets of Brooklyn, skinny and scared. After adjusting to shelter life he was adopted and quickly returned because he “talked too much”. He’s a siamese what did they expect?!? Much quieter now, he’s become depressed and is losing weight again. Let’s hope he finds a home soon…
We find it hard to believe that someone hasn’t snatched him up already. For info on BARC click here.

Every week, we highlight a few random comments left during the previous week by GL readers. Here are this week’s choices:
Boerum Hill School Changes Parking Regulations on Its Own. “DOT will be replacing the sign.” [Anonymous]
Vituperative Grand Street Rezoning Fight in Flier Form. “Can we define terms? Who is a developer? A resident of 10, 25, or 40 years who is building something to live in? The people hurt by the downzoning are not big developers. They are people with small lots who have lost 15% – 40% of their net worth. There are people in the community who have dramatically misinformed the public about the true nature of the rezone. The rezone was rushed through in 92 days with no notice to land owners, no notice in Spanish. When I read the hate comments, I wonder why the writers don’t get that they are only hurting their neighbors.” [Anonymous]
“Private Meetings” & Public Shrinkage at 360 Smith. “A lower building would have made the neighborhood happy and Stein is a thief and is stealing what is not his in the plaza. The building is a monstrous size for a tiny street and anyone who thinks it is the best thing that ever happened to Carroll Gardens needs his head examined. Cars will not even be able to enter the driveway on Second Place of the new building without us losing the parking spots on the other side of Second Place. That’s how narrow the street is. Is it any wonder the neighborhood has revolted? Good for them! It was a monstrosity from the beginning and still is. Ditto 340 Court St. Can CG “take” this height? Hell no! What a shame it is to ruin such a nice neighborhood. Someone sold out CG. A reasonably-sized building would have been embraced by the neighborhood.” [Anonymous]
Strollers In, Computers Out on Weekends at ‘Snice. “By the second weekend, it was a horror show in ‘sNice. The no laptop rule has made a difference.” [Anonymous]

There is something compelling about photos of cars in Brooklyn whose wheels have been stolen that have been left up on the proverbial blocks or, in this case, big rocks. This car is from Gerritsen Beach, where several such incidents have happened in recent weeks.–GerritsenBeach.Net
