A Hopeful Little Tree & a Reopening in Windsor Terrace

May 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Eden Memorial Tree

There is hopeful news from Windsor Terrace and Eden Cleaners, which was the site of the murder of a beloved neighborhood business person last week. A memorial tree has been quietly planted, the slain owner’s son reopened the store yesterday morning and says he intends to carry on the business. A memorial fund has been started by resident Brenna Beirne and her neighbors in Kyung-Sook Woo’s honor. First, the news about the tree via an email we received:

It was planted this morning outside Eden Dry Cleaners. A sapling in line with a series of older, mature trees along that street. No fanfare or ceremony. They just put it in and people started noticing that it was there. A neighbor spoke with Mrs. Woo’s son who spoke of the family’s determination to keep the store operating, saying this is what his mother would have wanted, and who pointed proudly to the tree.

Meanwhile, the Linda Woo Memorial Fund has been created for those who want to make donations to pay for a memorial plaque. Per an email, “Checks can be made out to the Linda Woo Memorial Fund, placed in an envelope marked ‘Memorial Fund’ and dropped in the mail slots of either 243 Windsor Place- beginning Tuesday May 27th, or 18 Reeve Place- beginning immediately. They can also be mailed to the Linda Woo Memorial Fund c/o Brenna Beirne, 711 Greenwood Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11218. Donations can also be made via paypal to the account, community11218@gmail.com. The Times has an account of Eden’s first day back in business with brothers Kenneth and Daniel Oh

Brookbit: Weird Light Over Brooklyn?

May 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments

From the GL Inbox last night at 12:00 AM comes this missive: “I saw a very strange light above the western horizon over Brooklyn at 11:47 p.m. Saturday night. If it was a shooting star, it was the biggest I have ever seen. It flashed blue-green and then disappeared. I am freaked out. Did anyone else see this? Could it have been some kind of ball lightening or something? Signed, Take me to your leader?”

Disconnected in Brooklyn: Al Swearengen Mustache Guy

May 25th, 2008 · Comments Off on Disconnected in Brooklyn: Al Swearengen Mustache Guy

This is our first Bedford Avenue / Al Swearengen / Deadwood Sunday Missed Connection and, in all likelihood, the last. Here it is:

“Al Swearengen” mustache guy at L.A. Burrito, 10pm Saturday night – w4m – 23 (Bedford Ave., Williamsburg)

When I saw you, I said to my friend, “Jesus Christ that is an amazing mustache.” He agreed. I figured I couldn’t NOT say anything, and asked you if you watch Deadwood and if you get the Al Swearengen comment “all the time.”

“No,” you said. Oh well. I really like it, though. Not to mention the sideburns. The neck tattoos are a little distracting, I’ll admit, but goddamn do you look like a badass.

We’re thinking she digs the look.

Coney #2: Here Comes “Beer Island”

This is what would appear to be Coney Island’s version of Water Taxi Beach, except that it is Beer Island, featuring beer, wine, food and entertainment. This is the property was a miniature golf course before it was demolished by developer Joe Sitt. Last summer, it was home to a big, inflatable water slide. (Note the Mister Softee truck that appears to be a permanent summer resident in a pit surrounded by sand.) It they could truck in and plant some palm trees for the reason and install a water feature, it would be complete. Cheers.

Brookbit: What’s Up at the Seventh Avenue Slope Post Office?

May 25th, 2008 · Comments Off on Brookbit: What’s Up at the Seventh Avenue Slope Post Office?

From a GL reader come the following query: “The post office on 7th Avenue between 2nd and 3rd Streets has lost its sign. They already had the gate in the front window down when I passed since they had
closed several hours earlier. I could, however, see in the door and there certainly was no indication that anything catastrophic had happened. Are they getting a new sign, and if so, does that mean they’ll be cleaning up the interior? Or are they – for whatever unimaginable reason – (gasp!) closing this office?” Yes, they are getting a new sign, but we don’t know if they are cleaning the place up. (Our guess would be “no.”)

Amity Street Horror II Jeered in Cobble Hill

May 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The development planned at 110 Amity Street in Cobble Hill, which would involve alteration of the historic Lamm Building and addition of new townhomes, got a chilly reception from Community Board 6 this week. The new Cobble Hill Association blog contains details of the meeting on Thursday night. The developer, Time Equities, has refused to publicly release renderings of its revamped proposal so that Brooklynites can more broadly see what they intend for the property. The image here is of the concept that was roundly rejected and dubbed the “Amity Street Horror.” Per the CHA blog, a CB6 Land Use Committee member made a motion to reject the four new buildings proposed by the developer because of “the extensive use of zinc on the sides, rear facades and penthouses,” the possible visibility of penthouses from the street and because the buildings should be cut to three stories rather than the proposed four. The developer didn’t bring “drawings and plans sufficient to facilitate a consideration by the committee” of their proposals for altering the Lamm Building. No action was taken on Amity Street Horror II, and they’ll be back next month with or without big penthouses and “extensive zinc.”

Park Slope Moment: “The End of Upper Case Letters”

May 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today’s emails that have come our way via the always interesting and blogworthy posts to the Park Slope Parents list makes for perfect Memorial Day Weekend reading: are Park Slopers abandoning the use of upper case letters in their emails? Is it too complicated to hit the shift key at the same time as a letter? Here’s the email that was brought to our attention:

Is it ok if I just ask, what’s behind the abandonment of upper case letters these days? I know it’s gone on for a while, and I find myself circling around it and wondering a few things: Is it because everyone is in such a hurry that it’s easier just to let it go? I’m usually in a hurry but it doesn’t take much energy to push the shift key, except when I’m texting.

Is it because of Nursing at Keyboard (aka nak) ??????
