The New (Interim) Look at Carroll Street

We’ve run a couple of items this week about the impending closure of the biggest entrance to the Carroll Street subway station in Carroll Gardens so that work can go ahead on the 360 Smith Street project (also known as Oliver House). This is a look at what the former plaza in front of the station, about which there are strongly-held opinions in the neighborhood, looks like now. It is in sort of a mid-stage between being open and being completely closed as of July 28. The photographer writes, “Looks like the 360 Smith luxury condo development is going to shut down my subway entrance, and severely mess up the nice plaza in front… for 6-8 months!”

Nice plaza? While there will be a serious inconvience with the loss of the entrance, this was only a place to stand while the train came down from Smith 9th. Four litter strewn tree pits and a decrepit newsstand do not make plaza.

It was nice to be able to stand outside though and only go down once you saw the train coming. Stupid developers.

I think this may be the first time a lot of people in CG are actually affected by overdevelopment, and may begin to realize why so many have been campaigning against it. OMG it really IS a quality of life issue!!

There’s an entrance on the other side of Smith. It’s not like they’re closing down the whole station…
Yes, it was nice to wait outside, but this was hardly a nice place. When the building is done, there will be an open area underneath the corner of the building where the plaza is now, where people will be able to wait for the trains -and not get wet when it’s raining! Sounds even nicer to me.

It is a relatively nice plaza. “bored at work” should remember what city this is.
