Here’s our good, old Ninth Street Bridge over the Gowanus Canal as it appeared in 1940.

The Smith & Ninth Street Bridge! I would have to travel to 4th Ave. & 9th Street to catch a train to go to school. Sometimes the group I traveled with would get stuck at the Hamilton Avenue Bridge and then get stuck again at Smither & Ninth Street. Eventually we learned to get off at Ninth Street and travel up the never ending staircase to catch the train if we ever got caught at the Hamilton Avenue Bridge.

My grandfather, William F Donlon, was a draw bridge operator at the 9th St bridge. He used to take me to work in the 50’s. Thanks for posting these photos.
