Walk by the Brooklyn Academy of Music recently after a snowstorm and notice barricades and police tape? This is because the canopy that was added (which we like) collects snow and ice and is angled in such a way that said frozen precipitation can then fall on pedestrians walking by. Well, a little snow slide isn’t going to hurt, but how about a hunk of falling ice. Stranger things have happened. This is what they call not thinking the design of the 130-foot undulating glass canopy through all the way, we think. In more pedestrian terms, we think they call it a major screw up. We noticed scaffolding up under the canopy, so God know what comes next. Word of advice: walk under the canopy after a snow, not in front of it, or just cross the street.

Probably enough snow/ice on their to do some damage. A few years ago I saw huge chunks of ice falling from 750 Seventh Ave (Times Square). Sounded like an avalanche, everyone around ran for cover. I saw a guy get hit on the head, it wasn’t pretty. Sounds like it wasn’t thought through too well.

Somebody should shovel that roof!
When it rains, that canopy also makes a HUGE waterfall. When that happens, people going to a show inside BAM make a mad dash through it. But I guess that’s what a canopy is for, as long as you’re under it.

This may not be up to code-In fact we did a similar canopy at Chelsea Market you are not allowed to shed water to the sidewalk on a ‘marquee’ which is how this might be filed. you need a gutter. we pitched to a gutter on the building line to avoid the unsightly or difficult to build edge condition.

WE WANNA INSTALL HEAT BARS ACROSS THE GLASS OF THE CANOPY TO AVOID THE ICE ON TOP OF THE CANOPY..
