Park Slope Retail Report: Kids RX Open in Old Second St. Cafe Space

November 11th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Well, friends, the deed is done on Seventh Avenue. A pharmacy is now open in the space that had once been the Second Street Cafe, where the food was so-so and the little ones could draw on their placemats and find the results of their art posted on the walls. In any case, a couple of shots of the new tenant, above and below.

In general, the pharmacy business is dead. Most people fill their prescriptions at chain pharmacies or are forced to obtain their prescriptions from online or mail-order pharmacies. Insurance companies severely limit which medications they will cover and profit margins for pharmacies are tiny. Pharmacies depend upon profits from non-prescription products and from those rare customers who pay out-of-pocket for their medications or who purchase non-covered medications.

So, what do we have here on Second St.? Another pharmacy? I think most Slope residents are loyal to existing pharmacies, whether it be the remaining mom-and-pop pharmacies like Palma and Neergaard, or the chains. A cosmetic/health and beauty aid store? Do we need another?

One wonders what the rent is on this space. How many bottles of John Freeda conditioner for tangled hair will they have to sell to make money?
I wish small business people well: they deserve to have their hard work rewarded. But, do your due diligence: open businesses in niches that are in need.

Having recently visited some friends in Park Slope , I could not help wonder if this Kids Rx is trying to imitate my favorite pharmacy on the Upper East Side of Manhattan! Their slogans and “pitch” resemble almost verbatim those of Cherry’s Pharmacy. My kids love Cherry’s and they were at first happy, but then became quite upset when we learned this store had nothing to do with Cherry’s!! My six-year old said: “copycat”. There’s only one Cherry’s.

To respond and set the record straight. I am the original owner of cherrys I sold it to open the kids rx stores. Kids rx offers the best of cherrys and a whole lot more.

Experiencing the place yourself might help. I am surprised by the comments here. I recently posted the following on the Park Slope Parents list:

I have received such shockingly good service from Kids RX pharmacy (189 7th Avenue at 2nd Street) that I was moved to post here, to help this business (to which I have no personal connection) thriving. To sum it up:
    1. When I called, the pharmacist himself (Bill Brownstein) answered. (I later met the other pharmacist, Salvatore Gagliardotto, who was also pleasant and helpful.)
    2. He insisted that he could get any medicine whatsoever for me. He was pleasantly dismissive of my tales of experiencing how hard it can be to fill this particular prescription, how one sometimes has to wait a few days to get it in stock. Really, he repeated, he could get anything.
    3. He offered to accept the prescription by fax or email.
    4. When it turned out the prescription was two days out of date, he immediately called me up and offered to get in touch with the physician himself to update it. I professed utter disbelief. To quote him, “Once you send it to me, it’s my problem.”
    5. He renewed and filled the prescription within an hour or so and offered to deliver it to me at home or at work.

What can I say? We should keep these folks in business.
