“Summer of Hope” Brings “Night of Faith” to Astroland

August 8th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Thor Equities didn’t publicize it’s “Night of Faith” at Astroland last night, but it’s doing so after the fact this morning. Here we go:

Thor Equities last night hosted more than 1,000 members of eight separate Coney Island religious congregations at Astroland amusement park in Coney Island — part of a free “Night of Faith.” Led by renowned local leader and founder of the Salt and Sea Mission in Coney Island, Debbe Santiago a.k.a. “Pastor Debbe;” she and her organization partnered with Thor to create the Night of Faith featuring free t-shirts, food, I-Pod giveaways and free rides for everyone.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer the Coney Island community nights of celebration and fun,” said Joseph J. Sitt, president of Thor Equities. “Pastor Debbe is an icon and a hero to many people in Coney Island. We are honored to do our small bit to help those who dedicate their lives to helping others. It is a thrill to partner with Pastor Debbe again and bring smiles to so many faces.”

…The Salt and Sea Mission Church, Inc., a not for profit organization, was established in 1987 as a statement of Christian faith by Debbe Santiago. While Debbe was homeless, she ministered to homeless people under the boardwalk in Coney Island with food, clothing and the Bible. From there she grew the Mission to help the local community…Currently, the Mission feeds approximately 28,000 meals monthly, offers weekly Bible classes, drug and alcohol counseling, referrals to detoxification programs, job training, legal assistance, medical and dental, HIV/AIDS entitlement, literacy classes, long term residential programs, ESL classes for Russian and Spanish speaking people, reading classes for children, and outreach and food distribution to senior citizen apartment buildings.

Thor will be sponsoring a number of additional free events for the Coney Island Community throughout the rest of the summer.

Thor’s “Summer of Hope” rides, packed up recently and it’s unknown if they will be replaced for the remainder of the summer season. The last “Summer of Hope” event was a “Beach Brawl” at Beer Island, which featured boxing cops and firefighters, so this event was a bit different.

I hope this person realizes that once Sitt is finished using her for his purposes… he wont even acknowledge she exists. Selling out the future of coney island for a hot dog

He’s a bulldozer with ‘waterfront-condos-dollar signs’ glistening in his eyes. Don’t be fooled by this latest publicity attempt to spin a better public image. It’s not about community or building rides to replace the one’s he’s demolished (and what about those jobs previously lost?). Mr. $itt is bad news for Coney Island’s soul. Build rides, not condos, not malls.
