It’s Time to Get Your Giglio On

July 9th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Yes, the 121st Annual Feast at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, aka the Giglio, starts today. It runs through July 20. While the feast itself involves a lot of street food, games and rides, the highlight are the two Sunday “dances” of the incredible Giglio statue. They take place on Sunday, July 13 and 20. (There’s also a Night Dance on Thurday, July 17. The Capo Parade is the morning of the 13th.

One of the few remaining events in Williamsburg celebrating the once very large and buzzling Italian community on the Northside. Yesterday was a parade that roamed the neighborhood to get donations and offered a large loaf of blessed bread .. only a $1.00 – now that was like the old days in the neighborhood! Just attended the Capo Parade in the quiet morning streets of Williamsburg. Barely a sole out. Approx 200 church members were lead through the streets by a festive brass band.
This festival is a wholesome tradition that should be supported.

I go to feasts all over and though i’ve been to bigger ones, the Giglio is something i’ve never seen before. I’m hooked and I’ll be attending the future feasts in BK and Harlem….not sure I’ll make it out to LI though.

I am a lifter of the giglio, and one of the youth members of this feast that will continue it in the future. It is the oldest feast in new york city and one of the oldest in the entire nation. It is without a doubt the greatest italian feast in the country due to how long it has lasted and because it is unmatched by every other feast this nation has seen. Also, two seperate saints are worshiped during this feast, and it will always be preserved and apart of Williamsburg history and tradition where it belongs.
