There’s a community meeting coming up on May 29 about the city’s contentious plans to expand and reopen the Brooklyn House of Detention. It will take place at 7PM at the Belarusian Church on the corner of Atlantic Avenue & Bond Street. Here’s a bit from the House of Detention Stakeholders group that’s sponsoring the meeting:

More vision, less prison! The Brooklyn House of Detention Stakeholders invite the community to attend an open forum to discuss the future of the Brooklyn Jail. The Department of Corrections and the City of New York want to reopen the jail and double the inmate population at the gateway to Brooklyn, shutting out all community involvement in the process. There ARE options. Join us to learn what else can be done on the site that will serve both justice and the community!

The group includes 53 Boerum Place Board of Managers, Atlantic Avenue Betterment Association, Atlantic Avenue LDC, Boerum Hill Association, Brooklyn Vision Foundation, Cobble Hill Association and State Street Houses Association. The group’s website, which has a great deal of information about the issue, is here.
