Giglio Dance #1: The Unique Beauty of the Lift

July 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Here’s our first photo gallery from the Giglio Festival on Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg. The lift took place under a blazing sun at 2PM with a crowd that seemed smaller than usual, possibly because of the blistering heat. We decided to make the “faces” of the Giglio lift a separate photo gallery.

We went over to Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg last night to catch the Night Dance of the Giglio that’s part of the Giglio Festival at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. There was a crush of people (the questionable estimate was 28,000), but far less than shows up for the Sunday lifts (the last of […]

Never Mind the Fourth, It’s Almost Williamsburg Giglio Time

July 3rd, 2008 · Comments Off on Never Mind the Fourth, It’s Almost Williamsburg Giglio Time

It seems like only yesterday we were walking backwards down Williamsburg’s Havemeyer Street in a big crowd in blazing heat in front of a three-ton, five-story tall statue carried by several dozen men that can not stop on a dime. And, now, it’s almost time to do it all over again. The 121st Annual Feast […]

The Giglio Now & Then: What a Difference a Week Makes

July 23rd, 2007 · Comments Off on The Giglio Now & Then: What a Difference a Week Makes

Was it only last week that we watched people hoisting the Giglio and carrying it down the street? Well, the Giglio is now only a skeleton of its former self, which we found interesting in both a before-and-after and how-things-are-made kind of way.

Giglio Mania #3: The Compelling Spectacle of the Giglio

July 16th, 2007 · 3 Comments

There is nothing quite like standing in front a three-ton, 80-foot-tall statue being carried down a Williamsburg street, while you are walking backwards shooting photos and praying that the people behind you move and that you do not fall and get trampled. Trust us, it adds some spice to life, particularly because the Giglio–the lift […]

Giglio Rides Light Up Williamsburg

Today’s your last chance to see the fascinating lift and “dance” of the Giglio on Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg. (Warning: It tends to be very crowded.) GL Pop Quiz: Which Supporter is Slightly Out of Place?

June 2nd, 2007 · Comments Off on GL Pop Quiz: Which Supporter is Slightly Out of Place?

Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Havemeyer Street is the church where the annual Giglio Feast takes place in Williamsburg. It has many local supporters and, apparently, rasies about $250,00 for the parish. One of the firms listed on this sign, though, kind of jumps out at you. This sign has been up for some […]
