New Gowanus Carroll Street Bridge Vista Would Be Different

September 9th, 2008 · 5 Comments

This is a rendering from the massive Draft Environmental Impact Statement that has been done for the proposed Toll Brothers development in Gowanus, which has generated its share of community opposition. The massive document clocks in with 26 sections and runs hundreds of pages, covering some of the possible impacts the big project would have on the community. It includes some fascinating before and after shots of Gowanus, superimposing renderings of the development on the existing streetscape. The full set of them is over at Curbed, but we’re particularly taken with this view of the Carroll Street Bridge with which we are so familiar and how it would change. The new view is above and the current view is below. The full report can be found here. It has been posted, chapter by chapter, in PDF form.

I like the image where I would not see a bunch of dumb morons hanging out on their new poorly built balconys. The Gowanus on Carroll street is a little tucked away corner that should be developed carefully and with sensitivity to the surrounding neighborhood. This new building looks like every other piece of garbage that is going up. Develop WITHOUT destroying. These architects and developers have ZERO imagination and look like every other architect and developer out there. SHEEP!!!!

wooden, what are you so upset about? you really think what’s currently there is better? what exactly are you destroying? you need to move to the burbs cause nyc is constantly changing and you don’t seem to be able to handle it. you’d be happier somewhere else. so go. now. the sheep are biting you in the ass.

In the rendering, they forgot to put the new building at an angle, portraying the sinkhole it would most likely start falling into.

it destroys the open sky vista, a quiet slope in a busy brownstone area. it sucks. it is ugly and progress or no progress, it is tastless, ugly and oportunistically chalenged. they also didn’t even squeeze in the corner of the bunker, which destroys the skyline even more.

The Gowanus Canal is this small intimate piece of 19th century late industrial revolution history.
Except for the greed of the developers what purpose is served by surrounding it with over designed , oversized, post modern, junk ?
